I bought my son the Fitbit Ace. Is the display screen supposed to be visible at all times as my son's goes to blank screen and only visible if he double taps. It defeats the object of having the clock visible. Is this how the device is supposed to work? I have restarted the fitbit just to double check.

That is how it's supposed to work. The idea is to save battery power as the screen uses a lot of energy.
In the manual it says:
"The screen on Ace is dimmed when not in use. It wakes up automatically when your child turns their wrist, or they can double-tap Ace where the screen meets the band. "

Does your son's screen come on when he raises it to read the time? This feature is known as QuickView and should be on by default. This is much easy than tapping to see the time and there's more information on it here: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1744/

Hello @Satty, I can see @SteveH already provided you with all the information on why the display stays on for a few seconds only. This definitely helps to improve the battery life of the device, which would be considerably reduced if the clock or screen stayed on for longer or permanently.
If you haven't done so already, I recommend that you also visit our Discussion's forum to share your experiences with Fitbti!
