I'm thinking about buying an Ace 2 for my 8 year old son. Does anyone know if there is a way to turn off notifications and alerts during the school day? While I think it's important for him to move around and get in his steps, I don't want this to be a distraction for him at school.

Welcome to the Fitbit Community, @russgiro88.
I appreciate your interest in Fitbit Ace 2 and I am glad to assist you with your concern about the option to turn off notifications during the school day. I understand your concern and would like to advise that the notifications can be turned off in quick settings on Ace 2:
1. Press and hold the button on the tracker to reach the quick settings screen.
2. Tap Notifications to turn them off.
Reminders to move can also be turned off. For more information, see How do I turn reminders to move on or off on my Fitbit device?
You can find more information about the Ace 2 in this manual and at How do I get started with Fitbit kids devices?
I'll be around if you have any additional questions.
