Activity shows incorrect amount of calories burned

I take Lagree fitness classes which are performed on a machine similar to a Pilates reformer. The owner of the studio and Lagree fitness claim you should burn 300+ calories a class. Based on my body composition and level of exertion in the class, the owner of the studio thinks I should burn 500+ calories a class. I wore my Fitbit during class for the first time today. After class I manually added this morning's 45 minute workout (manually adding an activity which started at 8:40am and ended at 9:25am) and labeled it as a Pilates workout and it said I only burned 132 calories!! Is that number based on me labeling it as a Pilates workout, or is it based on my heart rate recorded by the Fitbit during that time period?

It would be helpful if Lagree fitness was an exercise option in the Fitbit software. I can customize an entry, but I don't necessarily know what to put in the calories field. Was hoping to be able to wear the Fitbit during class and it would tell me the amount of calories burned.

Any help is greatly appreciated! 🙂

Since the exercise tracking in the Alta HR is automatic, I think your potential workaround will be in manual logging. I would experiment logging a few of the workouts under different categories, to find one that logs what is reasonable for a given exercise.

My understanding is it does use the underlying HR data to calculate calories, but depending on the category of exercise that number can change quite a bit. I have a couple of exercise routines that need to be logged under a different category to get an accurate calorie count.

OMG yes! How great is Lagree Fitness. Full body workout and that super shaky feeling afterward!

Totally agree regarding adding Lagree to the fitbit tracker.

For those who haven't tried Lagree before, check out this article https://www.chiefactive.com/trend/lagree-fitness-kkore-port-melbourne/

I log my lagree time as barre class.  The calories still aren't off the charts but it's the closest I can find to Lagree.  I do find the estimated calories change drastically depending on what type of class you log it as. I do a lot of both classes and they're fairly similar in intensity.

I had the same issue with Pilates.  According to the Academy of Exercise, Pilates burns 180 calories int he first 30 minutes and 90 minutes for each additional 15 minutes, so my hour class should have shown 360 calories burned, but instead, it showed 125!  I contacted Fitbit and they said that I should restart my Fitbit, which is ridiculous as I only just got it.  Their Algorithm is obvious incorrect.  They only just recently added Yoga and Pilates to options and the Pilates is obviously wrong.   I'm going to manually add it from now on.

HI There,

Ok so I have the same issue, I took a hardcore 50 mins pilates springboard class and it said i only burned 123. I went to pilates and put 50 mins and that's what I got. I felt it was incorrect should i try tracking with my charge 3  as "weights" or something other. what have you found helped?

Well, initially I manually entered another Pilates session at the same time, using the calories burned listed by the Pilates lifestyle, minus what Fitbit showed, but it was too much trouble, so I just learned to live with it. I told Fitbit that their algorithm was incorrect, but....nothing.  My friend has an Iwatch and it showed slightly more than what Fitbit showed (I think it showed 168 calories while my Fitbit showed 135)

I guess the tech who work on these things don't really research what the activities really do burn.

"The research team found that a 30-minute session at an intermediate level burned 180 calories, and continuing the workout burned an additional 90 calories each 15 minutes. It was also found that men burned slightly more calories than women (likely due to the fact that men are larger and have more muscle mass)."

Yes, that is what I read which led me to believe my tracking was wrong with Fitbit. I have the charge 3 so setting the device to weights, treadmill etc. seems to be fine but logging pilates seems off.

Thanks 🙂

Hello I am having the same issues as most posted here. I do a lot of pilates - both mat and reformer. The most frustrating thing for me is how it records my heart rate in the pilates cardio reformer class.  Today about 40 minutes into the highest level cardio class, I stopped after 3 minutes of sustained jumping and checked my heart rate - it was something like 73?!

This is completely wrong, at that point I practically hyperventilating. I also jog and felt like my heart rate at that moment was well beyond points where the fitbit tells me my heart rate is something like 145-150.  Is there something strange about the way it reads your heart rate when lying down?
