Brand new Alta HR, purchased about 2 years ago but never even used. Perfect condition. Set up and paired today and it died today. Told by Fitbit Help all they can do is offer me a 25% discount on a new one. Buying another seems to be a terrible idea...

Have you tried a restart on the device and see if that helps?  

Place the fitbit on the charger & press the button three times till you see the fitbit logo & vibrations.
