My Fitbit works however the display is broken. All I get is squiggly lines when I try to check steps, time etc.

I appreciate the details in your post about the display. You can perform a soft restart on your Alta HR by following the instructions from this help article: How do I restart my Fitbit device? under the option "Ace and Alta Series".
