I recently started using the Alta HR. It is a few years old (my brother got it and never used it) so this may be the issue. However, sometimes I will just be sitting down doing nothing and my heart rate reader randomly increases, sometimes up to 40 or 50 bpm higher than it should be.
I always cross reference it with a heart rate test on my own (by counting bpm on my own) and it’s incorrect. Other times it works fine but I tried resetting it and I have still been having the same issue.

Welcome to the Community, @Conradboyd.
Thanks for troubleshooting this heart rate issue. If you are having problems with this information, I recommend taking a look at the help article: What factors can affect my heart-rate reading on my Fitbit device? and follow the tips provided there. After following them, test your unit.
Let me know the outcome.
