Alta HR monitoring heart rate without being worn

The band on my Alta HR lost the little receptacle that the device goes into. I’m having a new band delivered so no worries. In the meantime to keep track of my steps, I put the Alta in my shorts’ pocket. This seems to work. 


However, I noticed that HR is reading a heart rate. How is this possible? I’m not wearing the  device yet it reads a HR.
