I have an Alta HR, and for around a week it worked great showing the details of my sleep, but then stopped working - just showing basic information, blaming the heart rate monitoring, despite that showing continuously.
Are the newer current models more reliable? Or just as bad? I want a new watch, and I was going to stay with fitbit because of the sleep details, but not sure whether I should bother now.

I think people can only respond with their own experience. I have the newer Inspire HR, which is basically the replacement model for your older Fitbit, and besides finding it much more comfortable to wear than the Alta HR, I have had absolutely no problem getting my sleep regularly recorded. I think it is an excellent all round device.
The more expensive models (Charge 3 and 4 and the Versa smartwatch series) will give you an extra detail stat which can alert you for breathing problems during sleep, and help determine how restorative your sleep is. If that might be helpful to you, you could consider one of those Fitbits.
Fitbit still offers a 45 day guarantee if you buy directly from them, so you can get your money back if you find the one you choose doesn’t suit you. You will, however, have to pay the return postage unless you are returning it because it is faulty.
I hope this helps. Welcome to the forums!
