Black screen and green lights won't turn off

Fitbit was fully charged the night before. The battery drains within a day. Today the screen went black. App said it was dead but the HR lights were solid green and wouldn’t turn off.

Thank you for this detailed report! I have done the same stuff to mine but symptoms are a bit different.
Green lights on all the time but display works when it's charged. Once it's fully charged it lasts about 7 hours give or take, so I put on after my shower, about
10 AM, and it's dead by dinnertime so I get to count my steps mid day, and know what time it is, as long as I'm inside LOL!

Funniest thing ever.
After being so frustrated with my Alta I decided to buy a new one. Apparently it's been discontinued and most stores are out of stock. I have 5 pretty bands that I bought to dress it up a bit so was so disappointed! So I decided to just use the darn thing and figured out that if I charge it at night (good bye sleep monitor), I can use it during the day as a watch and step counter until it dies, so I get 10AM to 7PM out of it. After 3 or 4 days of doing this I plugged it in on Thursday night and yesterday morning when I put it on I noticed the lights weren't blinding green any more but gently flashing like they should. It's now Saturday early afternoon and it's still on and the battery is showing 3/4 full.
Wow! It must have known I was looking to junk it and scared it into submission!
Unfortunately though, I synced it this morning and the "dashboard" is gone. An upgrade maybe? Anyway I hate the new look so if they changed it I am still disgusted with FitBit overall.

I'm another one with the same problem, been a Fitbit person for 3 years and this is my second Alta to fail.  First was a regular Alta, this one is Alta HR, and it's out of warranty.  Unless customer service can do something great, I'm done with Fitbit for good.  A discount won't keep me in the Fitbit family.

I was one of the complainers.
I let it go completely dead for a few days. Then plugged it in for a couple of days. (When I plugged it in I hit the reset button 3 times. )
3 days later I took it off the charger and the green lights were blinking again. It’s now been 3 weeks and it’s working like a charm!
Don’t give up!!!!!

I thought mine had revived too. It worked for a couple of weeks (aside
from no longer being able to come up with detailed sleep stages). But
today it went from fully charged to a battery low warning in 12 hours.

I did get the 25% discount offer. I’m somewhat torn. I would prefer to
switch to something else but most of the sleep trackers I’ve been reading
up on don’t detect REM and deep sleep.

I tried the resurrection methods described in this blog but still getting the steady green lights of death.  I will try AdriennePs method above next.

Oh no! My green lights are still on but I turned off auto sync and heart rate so at least the battery is lasting a little longer.

I guess I spoke too soon, the new battery life with auto functions turned off was short lived, just like my Fitbit.  Now it's back to lasting about an hour.  I give up, time to pitch it and move on, I'm done with Fitbit.  I can think of better ways to waste my money.

Yeah, I decided to try an Apple Watch, even though it's much more expensive
than the discounted Alta I could have bought (it helped a bit that Series 5
just came out; I was able to get $50 off on a Series 4).

I did have to add a sleep tracking app, ended up paying $2.99 and am quite
happy with it so far. Workout tracking is fine too, although I have to
manually start each workout rather than it automatically being tracked. On
the other hand, I can now track rowing, which the Fitbit didn't seem to
recognize.

So far so good.

Mine goes wonky about once a week, I let it run down to completely dead then plug it in pushing the reset buttons 3 times.
So far so good, it’s still working!

Yes, I've done all that but I give up.  I'm good at self control with my exercise regimen so Fitbit was fun but I'm done.  It was good to know it wasn't me but lots of faulty Fitbit Altas.

I was ready to junk it and I guess it heard me, it’s good now. Weird.

Add me to the list too! I hot it a little over a year ago, so it's not under warranty.  I've tried everything and nothing works! I'm not getting sleep info and it's also not logging all my steps. This started a few weeks ago. The green light is constantly on and the battery is drained within a day. VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!

The green light issue just started for me this week and yesterday it went from a full charge to no charge in a day. The green lights are more than just on, they are on full blast, extra bright with occasional blinks, even when the battery was dead. I'm out of warranty on mine too and thanks but no thanks on a discount of a new one. I'd rather they make it work right instead they are trying to get me to spend more money. In another thread about this I'm following someone has switched to a Garmin because of this problem and the response from Fitbit.

Yes, I'm not spending any more money on Fitbit either.  It was fun but I've made it through most of my life without a fitness tracker, so I'll be okay through the rest of it.  Still, I'm very disappointed.

I’m one of the complainers, I had some very nasty emails with the company. I decided to charge it every morning and at least get steps for part of the day. I needed a watch too! One day when the green lights were completely off, the sucker was very dead, I plugged it in, hot the reset button 3 times and it fixed itself. It’s been good ever since!

I was hoping that if the battery ran out of charge it might reset itself. I may let it run out again and wait for no more green lights then reset like you did.

I've been looking at other wearable fitness trackers but there are only a small number that will sync with MyFitnessPal so I may just stay with this one while it at least works for the most part. But there are some NICE ones out there with decent looking apps that are a fraction of the cost - but they don't sync with MFP and not being able to sync all the things would be confusing I think.
