Clasping and switching your Alta wristband

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

One of the trickiest parts of getting started with a brand-new wristband tracker is simply learning how to get it clasped properly. The following post can help you with that!

How do I clasp my Alta wristband more easily?

  • Before putting the wristband on your actual wrist, you can clasp and unclasp your wristband repeatedly using both hands. This will help to loosen the holes in the band a little bit, and should make it a bit easier to clasp when it's actually on your wrist.
  • As detailed in this help article, most people have success with "pinching" the clasp between two fingers when they go to put it on. This will usually be more effective than simply pushing hard against your wrist, which is both awkward and potentially uncomfortable.
  • An awesome tip that has been shared by @Gmadiane is to place a drop of olive oil on the holes and push the clasp through. This seems to have worked for quite a few other users. Thanks for sharing!

  • Once your wristband is clasped, make sure that both the metal prongs are securely in their holes, as shown below on the left. If one of the prongs is still loose, as shown on the right, then the band is not yet secure and may come off your wrist unexpectedly.

We're confident that you'll be able to get your alta clasped with just a little practice. Don't be discouraged if it's difficult at first - it definitely gets easier over time!

How do I change my Alta wristband?

Fitbit Alta's wristband is detachable from the top and bottom of the tracker, so that you can replace it with accessory bands of different color or material. For help with detaching your Alta's wristband, check the steps in this help article, or watch the video below.

I found that if I just align the first peg where the metal tip is located and use my index finger and thumb applying equal pressure, it snaps fairly easily, Then snap the second peg into the band is even easier.  As others have said, the more times you clasp and unclasp the band, the easier it is to do that.

I just don't undo my Fitbit, ever. I slide it on and off. I really hate this, but can't afford to replace it.

I mostly use it to track my sleep. I have to take it off when I meditate or play bass, as it records both of those as sleeping. Not a typo. When I play guitar it tracks that I am sleeping.

My Charge fell apart. After this one falls apart in 6 months (which is how long the Charge lasted), I'll be looking for another product.

Oh, and I sprung for the scale, and guess what happened? Can't sync it. Doesn't work.

They have totally lost a potentially good customer. Anyone who asks me about Fitbit gets my unedited opinion.

@JanBidwell If your Alta comes off without unclasping then it may be a bit too loose. I recommend wearing it snug enough so you can slide a finger in between the band and your wrist but not loose enough that it's sliding off your wrist.

I recommend restarting the Alta and then trying your meditation and bass playing to test if it continues to pick up those activities as sleep or not.

As for the issues with syncing your Aria scale, have you checked out these instructions for setup?

I could not imagine that a company, who values design - come up with this buckle wrist band.
How could this buckel band pass quality control? Did the CEO ever waer this horrow band? Every time I am putting the Alata on I sak myself: "What kind of customer satisfaction is this???? THIS IS A HORROW STORY".

I had the fitbit Flex for a long time but recently upgraded to the Alta.  This has to be the worst design of a wristband!  It has fallen off several times and then I lost it yesterday.  I knew that it was going to happen.  I would not buy another Alta until the wristband is changed.  Just terrible design!

Totally agree re the Alta wristband!  Mine has fallen off three times since I bought it in June.  I now spend too much time checking it is still on my wrist.  Hopeully soon there will be a replacement band I can buy that has a normal watch type wristband.

I have been happy with the bands I bought on amazon - two were silicon with
buckles, and the last is stainless steel. The stainless steel band is my
favorite. It is an iridescent purple/blue. The finish has not scratched and
the butterfly clasp is perfect. It can't fall off because the band is one
piece. You open the clasp to make it big enough to slide off (like a
stainless watch band). It has links so you adjust it to any size by
removing links (with a provided tool). Taking it off and putting it on are
easy tasks. It looks nice for all occasions and it is very comfortable for
all day wear and exercising. I sleep in it and take it off only to shower.
This summer I accidentally submersed it in the pool twice. Both times the
alta and stainless band survived. Come on fitbit, get on the band wagon.

Good morning, everyone! I too wish Fitbit would offer watch type bands for the Alta. Like @bitfan, I've ordered several from Amazon. A bit of advice though, if I may. Read the reviews. Look at what the band is made of. My flowered band is beautiful but it is plastic. I can only wear it comfortably for 3 - 4 hours at a time, especially in hot weather. The silicon bands seem to be more comfortable and thinner.

Also, be careful if you have a small wrist. A couple of the bands I ordered from Amazon were "one size fits all". They were much too long for my wrist.

Finally, to voice your request for a watch type band where Fitbit will hear it - and act on it if there is enough demand - click here. The more votes the better! I know I would prefer to purchase my bands from Fitbit where I am familiar with their quality and customer service.

I have always loved the silicone bands I've ordered from Amazon. I don't want the buckle type. I use the silicone sliders (2) each time I wear my Alta. Stays on my wrist beautifully 😄

I'm also having trouble snapping the prongs in place. I'll give the olive oil a try & if that doesn't work, I'll be returning the Alta.

@JeanetteW - you may want to look into this further. I've purchased several Alta bands from Amazon sellers. I've noticed that some were shipped directly from China. Another was shipped from a distribution center in the US. So the question is this - will Amazon not ship to New Zealand? Or is it that the Chinese seller will not ship from China to New Zealand? If the latter is the case, then try ordering a band that ships from the US. You can call Amazon CS to determine the shipping origination.

The Alta is such a great device. It is my favorite. I hate to see it pretending to be a dust collector.

I'm glad you like your Alta. I absolutely hate mine. I need it most to track my sleep. It tracked and said I was sleeping for an hour and a half when I was standing up and playing bass.

I don't trust anything it says. Unfortunately my Charge fell apart and I just can't afford to get anything else. So I've spent well over $200 for two pieces of junk.

Oh, I also got the scale. That doesn't work either. No surprise.

Hello,

There is a design flaw in the Alta wristband.  I bought an Alta from Best Buy when they first came out and the band was extremly hard to fasten (which actually was a good thing; that kept it from accidently coming undone).  I then bought a nifty pink leather band to go with the Alta.  The holes in the leather band stretched out entirely too quickly, and the Alta came off and the whole set-up was lost.  I then bought a Gold Edition Alta and just received it the other day.  I noticed that the fastener on this new silicon band fastens much, much easier than the first one.  I suspect Fitbit has redeisigned the band or clasp slightly.  So, this is my new concern -- when (not if) will I lose this new Alta because of the fact that the band fastener will come undone much to easily.  All materials  (natural or man-made) stretch out eventually, and that is the flaw with the Alta wrist band.  The company should have put a buckle type fastener on the band.  Let me test these devices for you.  I love the Fitbit devices and have different types, but I did not love losing an Alta!  Therefore, I would not add any lubricant (i.e. olive oil) to the wristband or try to loosen the holes that hold the clasp  -- that is asking for problems. You may lose it sooner rather than later.  Having said all of that -- I still consider the Alta a fantastic little device.
