Counting way too many steps!

So I've had my fitbit Alta for 4 days now....

It counted 50 steps yesterday morning before I had even got out of bed! Then I reached my 10k goal yesterday whilst sat at my desk, picking up approx 400 steps when I wasnt even walking.

I do a 10 minute walk to work, researching online this should be around 1,000 steps. My alta is picking up at between 1300 and 1600 steps. Its midday and I have been working from a desk all morning (with a trip to the ladies and to get a coffee... but this is a very short trip) and its racked up to over3.5k steps now! Yesterday I did do a little more walking but it was definatly not over 15k!!

I have the wrist and dominance settings set correctly too! I am only short at 5ft2! so i have short little legs... I've read you can change the stride settings, will this solve the problem as I'm close to returning it!

I just got an InspireHR and it’s doing this too! Did you find anything that helps??

Me too, adding steps I haven’t walked.  Happens daily. Paid a lot for this inspire. Expected accuracy. I stoped looking  at steps. They are so way off.

I agree. At first when I moved from Flex to Inspire I thought my flex was undercounting but then i earned 800 steps while sitting in a car, by myself (so no expressive hand jestures) for 2 hours.  It was a bumpy highway but that really made me doubt my results.  I’ve hit over 10,000 almost every day I’ve had it and that’s easily 2-3 times what I got with the flex. It feels so wrong it’s hardly worth wearing now. It sounds like a common Inspire HR problem- what’s  Fitbit doing to fix it?

That’s an interesting idea. I’ll try that. It’s uncomfortable when tight but that could be the problem- too much jostling. Thanks!

Thanks for this!  I'm hopeful it will work.  I've had my charge 3 for around 3 weeks but it only starting going haywire with the count from around Monday this week.  Yesterday I clocked up nearly 40,000 and was working from home.  Thanks again for your suggestion!

Hello, I am on my third Fitbit. Started with Flex, then Alta, now the Inspire HR. Today was the first full day wearing the Inspire HR and I seem to have done almost 12,000 steps even though I have been at my desk most of the day and have not exercised. I have the Inspire on my non-dominant hand like always, my personal settings are the same as always, i have disabled any location/GPS details. So I’m not sure why so many false steps? I have not encountered this before. What else can I do? Thanks

I drive for living and I work 14 hour shifts. I do get out of the truck to do inspections, throw straps, tie down straps and operate a hydraulic system. My issue is when I work it counts over 25,000 steps and I mostly drive like 400 to 500 km's a day. When I'm off and I'm active, like go to the gym, take the dog for a hike and ride my bicycle I usually average 8,000-10,000. What can I do to solve this issue?

I 1) I measured and set my stride length then turned off automatic, 2) took out the auto tracking exercises, 3) updated the Fitbit app and restarted my Fitbit afterwards.  It is more accurate- still off but not so wrong on the drive.

Good luck!

Same with me, i avoid wearing it while im driving ,also in the app choose
option Dominant hand usage but wear the watch on non dominant hand this
will somewhat reduce the sensitivity of counting a little bit.

I don't wear my Fitbit at night but when I put it on in the morning, there are already steps logged. This morning when I first put it on my wrist, it showed one flight of stairs and 1300 steps.

hello,

I'm suffering the exact same problems as you, I haven't even worn my fitbit today and apparently i have done 136,150 steps.

just go onto the fitbit app click your profile on the top left corner tap on the device that you are using and the option should come up on that page. if this does not work let us know and i can explain it more efficiently.

I was so excited about keeping track of my exercise & calories.

What is the point if I am credited for hand movements etc?

I clip my Alta HR on my bra when I'm not actively exercising. I actually get about 1200-2500 extra steps a day from arm movements when I do not.

True. I'm tracking trends, though, and I'm suddently (after about 2 years of using Alta HRs) tracking about 3000 extra steps a day on a day I mostly just sat at my desk with my alta clipped to my bra (so not extra arm motion at all).

Mine does the opposite. I can walk to the kitchen and back, and it doesn't count one step.
