The last time I fully charged my Alta, I synced it and realized there was a new update. I updated it and hours later when I tapped it to check my steps, the display wouldn't turn on at all. I tried syncing it and it couldn't find it. I plugged it back into the charger and it restarted, but was fully charged. I've tried restarting it, multiple times. As soon as it's disconnected from the charger and the display turns off I am not able to get the display to turn back on. Which also means it doesn't track any of my steps. I really think the update has made my fitbit completely unusable. 😞

Hi , my mother in law mailed me the Fitbit and I’m having the same trouble as everyone else . It’s only tapping on if it plugged in .

That's what they offered me too. Unfortunately they have no technical solution against this problem.

Once I shared my device details with them all they could give was a discount coupon on next purchase of any fitbit device.

I had the same problem with the Alta: the battery appeared to be fully charged, tapping and syncing worked while charging, but they stopped working immediately after unplugging. The problem for me was with the battery. Probably because it stayed not charged for a while the display showing how much it charged was broken. The solution was to keep it connected to the charger for a long time (e.g. 24h). For me, this solved the problem, and both tapping and syncing now work without the tracker being plugged in.

True. I was referring to the model as being old because Fitbit has developed several models since the Alta. For instance, friends of mine have Charge 2, Versa and Alta HR, and they didn't have this issue. But I've looked it up now and actually, Alta was released in 2016, so I take it back about the model being old.
Hope it helps and this will also work for you!

I, too, am now having this exact issue/problem. I have tried everything suggested on this thread to no avail. Really stinks because I love my fitbit and miss it terribly. Purchased this one in early 2017...seems 2.5 years is about average lifespan. At this point, I may have to consider a different brand.

It fixed mine too! Well I sold it but my friend was having issues and I just got it back and played around. Tried your suggestion and it's been staying on so far!

My daugher just got me a new Alta for Xmas because the one I bought 2 years ago quit charging. I have set up the new one three times and still cannot access the screen unless it is on the charger; even though the battery is fully charged. When I set it up the first time there was an update so figure it is the same issue as everyone else is having. I also am now reconsidering trying a different brand because of the short life of these things and now this issue. Very dissapointed because I really liked my fitbit 😞

My Alta is fully charged and when I tap it the displays shows everything, but when I unplug it from the charger it is a black screen. I have talked to a rep on the fitbit chat line. They walked me through how to reset my Alta, however it did not work!!! It was given to me as a Mothers day gift May 2018. Of course the warranty has expired and the only option I have is to buy a newer model....really. Ihave watched youtube videos, change the clock face, didn't work, reset....didn't work. Can any one help?

My Alta is only one and half (1.5) years old and they are telling me that my only option is to buy a new one, and even said they will give me a 25% discount....went to the site and low and behold they are already marked down 25%......for everyone. So am I getting a discount for using their equipment for 1.5 years.....no I don't think so.

I am late to the party, but my Alta is having the same issues, I was told the same thing. Explained how to reset the Alta, but that didn't work and then was told....well we will give you 25% off a new one. Funny went to the web site they sent me and Hell.....everyone gets the same price. I have only owned my fitbit for 1.5 years. Very disappointed in FITBIT.

I'm having the same issue. It's been three years and the problem is still there. Fitbit just doesn't care about their old products. Don't buy a Fitbit product again. Your new device will stop working again in 1.5 years so they can make money on you again. Endless loop...
