Geo-syncing gobbles up the battery

I thought my elderly Alta HR was dead. The battery would work for a day at most, usually half a day. I was about to bin it as a lost cause. Then I noticed an Android message about a fitbit syncing service running and thought, that's odd, I won't need that anymore so I unpaired it. The fitbit was fully charged so I thought I'd give it one more try before shelling out another £150 for a new one. That was 3 days ago, and it's holding a charge at its old, usual levels.

I guess I must have switched on location syncing at some point (I vaguely recall the fitbit nagging me about something and fiddling with settings). I prefer to not have Google tracking my every move, given they know enough about me already, so I don't routinely allow location tracking. Anyway thought I'd post this for others in case it might help with sudden battery failure.
