Resting heart rate highest reading of night

I am watching my heart rate pretty closely due to some medical issues. Last night during sleep, my heart rate briefly reached 69 bpm. I spent most of the night below 62bpm. Since I have been awake, my highest reading has been 68 bpm. My resting heart rate is showing as 70 bpm (it originally said 73 then after 10 minutes or so adjusted down to 70). This makes no sense as my hr has never even reached 70 since midnight. I thought the rhr was an average of some sort? How can it be higher than any of my hr readings for the day?

I've been noticing similar weirdness over the last several months.  When I check my heart rate at various times throughout the day - soon after waking up, while working on my computer or watching TV, and at other not-very-active times - my Alta HR shows my "current' heart rate as anywhere from 58 to 72 bpm, while my resting heart rate registers between 76 to 80 bpm.  Before it started doing this, my resting heart rate was averaging 67 bpm with occasional spikes up to 70 bpm.  I haven't had any significant lifestyle changes that would cause a lot of additional stress or anything like that.  I even tried doing a reset of my tracker one of the last times I recharged it, but that didn't make any difference.  I don't understand...
