any way to check on firmware updates? can't find out how.

If you mean what is the latest version number,

see What's changed in the latest Fitbit device update? 

But even if you don't have the latest version yet, there's nothing to do but just wait for it.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

@ZY   When you tap on your profile picture, then your Alta device tile, the next page will list the firmware you have.  If it says 21.40.2, then you have the current firmware.  The Alta/Alta HR were replaced by the Inspire/Inspire HR.  Now there is an Inspire 2.  It's rare, but not unheard of, for Fitbit to update firmware after a new model is released.
