0 Steps counted during tracked exercise

Hello- I have been having an issue lately where my Pixel Watch 3 is not counting any steps if I am in a tracked exercise. Specifically, I will usually have pickleball session lasting 2-5 hours. Once I've completed the session, it appears that absolutely no steps were recorded in that time frame. This results in my daily steps being significantly lower as it is missing my primary physical activity of the day.

I have a great example from today to display this behavior:

No steps recorded in the 1pm-4pm timeframe.

Here is an overview of my Pickleball exercise occuring during this time frame.

I briefly worked with chat and they advised I have my watch & app up to date (they are) and told me to restart the device (it is semi-regularly). This seems to be an issue occurring since I received my latest watch update.

I wanted to reach out to request that this bug is fixed. I want to maintain tracking on my exercise activity and have an accurate step count in Fitbit via my Pixel Watch 3. Currently this data is significantly off and I'm missing at least 5k steps when this happens. This has me questioning the accuracy of the device and is not the quality product I've come to expect.

Hello @csmall

I moved your post from the Public Preview help forum to the Android app forum since this issue is related to the Pixel Watch March update and not the Public Preview app.

This is a known issue on the Fitbit side. The team is aware of the issue and is working to fix the problem. So far, we haven't seen a timeline for the fix.

For now, please submit this issue using the Feedback option in the Fitbit app:

  • Tap your avatar in the upper right of the Today page in the Fitbit app
  • Tap Feedback in the menu that opens
  • Complete the prompt and submit

Although it's likely that you won't receive a response, we've gotten confirmation from the team that they review every submitted feedback report and use the information for issue investigation.

Rieko- I appreciate the help! It is so hard to find the right place to report and try to get help on these types of issues. I have submitted Feedback already as you suggested (though it doesn't allow the supporting images). I tried using the support chat and they didn't even acknowledge there was a known issue.

No problem, @csmall . The Fitbit forums can be a bit tricky to navigate.

Thanks for submitting the issue via the Feedback option. I agree that it would be helpful if we could include attachments, like screenshots, to the reports or have a true bug report feature in the Fitbit app.

Sorry to see that Support didn't acknowledge the issue. We're seeing users report this issue in both the Fitbit and Pixel Watch forums. And I know this issue has been escalated to the team.

I have the same problem. My Pixel 3 showed 0 steps in an hour when I was doing yard work.

Last week after mowing the lawn, I got a notification that I needed to move because I had only moved 40 steps in the last hour.

I've thought that my steps and calories have seemed low and these 2 examples confirmed my suspicion.

Hello @BDH308

I agree that you should have gotten some steps after doing yard work. Can you please give us a summary of what kind of yard work you were doing at the time?

As for mowing the lawn, it's likely that you didn't as many steps as you thought you would due to lack of arm movement. Wrist worn trackers, include Fitbits, use arm movement for step tracking. We see similar step tracking issues for people who push baby carriages, wheelchairs, carts, etc. Since their arms aren't moving much, they don't get very good/accurate step tracking.
