Can I no longer use my phone to GPS track bike rides?

I was recently migrated to the new app design -- v4.0.0 on a Nokia G22 Android phone. I have a Charge 5 tracker with its own internal GPS, but I always bring my phone along on bike rides for more accurate GPS tracking and so as not to kill the batter on my watch by using it's internal GPS for so long.

My watch died an hour into my ride yesterday (and for some reason the app auto detected that I was mountain bike riding even though I had actively started the activity on my watch). As a result, I lost all of the GPS data from the ride. When I played around a bit, I noticed that when I start an activity on my watch, even if I force syncing the app, it's unaware of the fact that I'm currently in an activity -- that would suggest that it's not possible for the app to handle the GPS aspect of the activity if it doesn't even know it's happening. Is this the expected behavior with the new app? Will they adding this feature back in over time?

I have GPS set to dynamic on my Charge 5 (I don't bring my phone along on short runs). I'll try setting it to "use phone" from now on and see if that actually works. It's possible my battery only died during the run because I no longer get battery notifications from the app and i couldn't see that it was low (the on device details are too small to read and it shows up as green even when it's as low as 20%)
