Even with the updated app, I can't register my AmEx card with Fitbit Pay

This is part of an ongoing and unsolved (as far as I can tell) issue with my AmEx card. It used to work with my Versa 3. One day the card disappeared and ever since I have been unable to register it back. I keep getting the message "Error: Invalid entry. Please check your input and try again." Any updates or hopes?

Have you set a pin for both your watch, and your phone?

For the watch, only when using Fitbit pay. For the phone, I use fingerprint and unlock pattern; not a pin. Just in case, the phone is a OnePlus Nine.

Something that seems to me a little bit odd is that, for less than a second after trying to register the card, I get a message from the app about checking my pin but not asking to confirm it.
