Let me help you figure out what is going on.
To better understand the situation I'd like to ask you what phone is it that you are using at the moment and if you paused the activity at some point. Also, let me know how the activity is showing on the app. Do you see the full map?
In the meantime, it is possible that the connection stopped or was lost at some point and that's why the distance was lost. If there were a lot of trees, buildings or the day was particularly cloudy then the connection with the GPS could've been lost and recovered at other time.
