Is there a way to track distance on the watch for a specific time period and not the whole day? I like to know how many miles I run so I don't need the distance for the entire day just for the period I'm running. And is there a way to reset the distance time on the watch by itself without completely relying on using the phone app?

I would say to use the multisport mode called running or the run recording option found in the Fitbit app.
