How is the average pace calculated?

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

Went for a walk today (actually behind the mower).  Fitbit app shows my really slow pace when I was putting stuff away (193' 07").  It also shows my fastest pace (27' 40").  Then it shows my average pace as 26' 21".

Maybe I don't understand the numbers.  Why is my average pace a lower number than my fastest pace?  Shouldn't it be the other way around?

@SunsetRunner Welcome to the Fitbit Community. Thanks for the screenshot attached and the details mentioned.

Note that the average pace is usually calculated taking your running/walking time then dividing it by the distance ran/walked. Also, make sure that your stride length is properly entered in your account. Your Fitbit device will multiply your steps for the stride length then show distance travelled.

To update your stride length, track a run with GPS or measure your stride length manually. For more information, see Can I change my stride length in my Fitbit account?

Hope this helps.

A faster pace results in a smaller number, right? A 15 minute mile is
faster than a 20 minute mile.

How can the average pace be quicker than the fastest pace? Seems like the
average should fall somewhere in between the slowest (highest number) and
the fastest (lowest number).

My side length is set to be automatically calculated by Fitbit and I was
using GPS to measure the actual distance walked.

@SunsetRunner Thank you for getting back.

Since the average pace is calculated taking into consideration your running time, this is why the number isn't somewhere in between the slowest and the fastest pace.

Since you mentioned that your stride length is automatically calculated, you may want to try enter it manually and continue monitoring your walks or runs' pace.

Hope this helps.

Okay that makes sense. I guess my thinking was too simple because a simple
average is always between the highest and lowest number. Since this
includes other things it doesn't necessarily come out that way.

Maybe I'll play around with stride length and see what happens.

Thanks for all your replies.
