Pixel 4A not showing message notifications

I started using a versa 2 a few months ago and after a few weeks set up notification forwarding. I set this up for both email and sms, after some time I stopped getting notifications for sms, but email continued to work. At this point, I figured fitbit was to blame so I unpaired the device, which caused things to work again, re-pairing later broke things, but on the second removal it no longer resolved the issue. To be extra sure, I removed the linked device from my fitbit account in the app and uninstalled the app, clearing storage/cache also.

To my surprise, I continue to not get ANY notification whatsoever on my phone for new sms messages. When I open the messages app, I will see new messages, but notifications are completely busted. This is without the fitbit app even installed and with bluetooth turned off. I have double checked that notifications are enabled for the messages app, but it makes no difference. I can no longer get notifications for this one app.

Searching on google doesn't yield anything helpful. At this point I don't care if I can ever get notifications to the watch anymore, I just want my phone to work.

Welcome to the Community, @foobar123 and thanks @Odyssey13 for your help.

Thanks for the details in your post and for the troubleshooting performed. It's weird since the Fitbit app only ask for permission to get text notifications for your Versa 2 but it shouldn't make any change on your notifications' settings, and you mentioned that this keeps happening even with the Fitbit app uninstalled. It seems that this happened to other Pixel 4A users as you can see on this Google Support's post. I recommend you to check it out and contact Google Support for further assistance.

Hope this helps.

I double checked and I think you're right. I think in the process of removing/adding the watch again to my account I must have toggled 'default notifications" off and on, resetting the "incoming notifications" field back to it's default state, which for now seems to confusingly mean "silent". Thanks for the link and helping me figure this out.
