I recently upgraded to an Android 8 ASUS Zenfone and I can no longer get my notifications to work though the Blaze does sync with the phone

None of the zenfone models are on the list of supported devices at www.fitbit.com/devices and it could be because of the notification issue.
Not being on the list means that it has either been tested and shown to not fully work, or it may just mean that it hasn't been tested. Unfortunately, there are a number of posts from zenfone owners reporting issues so I fear you may not be able to resolve this.

It's a common issue. The retail packaging of fitbits does suggest that people check for compatibility at www.fitbit.com/devices - but who reads the box before buying, especially if you are buying online!
