Aria 2 Body Fat % not accurate

ANSWERED

I measure myself same time of day, and the weight seems correct, but the body fat seems inaccurate. When I first got Aria 2 it had me down for 23% body fat, and that seemed right. Then I weighed myself a week later, and although I lost weight, I went up to 25%. I didn’t think much of it because people can gain fat and lose muscle when losing weight. Then I weighed myself a few days later and my body fat was 28.9%. There is no way that is true. I already tried switching between lean mode and regular mode, but nothing changed. Why did it increase my body fat so much? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Hello,

The scale is on a hard surface, and I step onto it barefoot.

Thanks.

I am having the same issue as Kaitlinmd29

I put it in lean mode (which only made my body fat % increase) and each time I step on the scale it increases by 1 or 2 % (this was after taking out the batteries for 15 seconds).

@mazayan Welcome to our Fitbit Community! I'm sorry to hear that your body fat percentage also increases even though you selected the "Lean mode".

Please try the following: Go to your profile settings and change your gender from female to male and save the changes. After this has been done, weigh yourself 1 time. Once you've done that, change the gender back to female, save the changes and weigh yourself 5 times in a row.

As a side note, I'd like you to take a look at this help article, which explains more information about the Aria 2 accuracy.

Let me know how it goes! Smiley Happy

This did not work, and I am also getting the connection error, I just bought this scale and am thinking of returning it. The weight is accurate, but everything else about this sucks!

Well, I never managed to fix those problems on mine, so I guess this scale is just not meant to work and I do regret I paid so much on something that I now use as a regular scale. Btw I bought mine more than a years ago and tried all the kind of troubleshooting they have advised me to.

Did this ever get sorted for you?

This literally is me except that I am 5’5”. I have done the reset with batteries out and restart with 5 weighs... no change. Any other ideas?  Note that I have had my body fat measured with InBody Impedance machines at 3 different gyms over the past 2-3 years and the highest it has been is about 23%. Right now it’s 20.5% and Aria tells me between 30.5 and 31%.

I've already done this and it went right back to the same problem again. It's not measuring body fat - it's recalling it. My wife and I have similar weights but very different body fat. When she steps on the scale after I do, it recalls my body fat % instead of measuring hers.

If I had to guess, I'd say your scale is seeing someone of the same-ish weight as the last person who stepped on the scale and is assuming it is the same person, and so not bothering to rescan your BF%.  I only have myself on my scale, so I'm not 100% sure how this goes, but my understanding is that you have to switch profiles between users manually if they have very similar weights.  Does the scale report your weight then show your initials, or whatever three letters that identify the individual?  Or does it record your individual weights correctly to your individual Fitbit profiles?  If the second one is true or you're already on top of the manual switch over and resetting the scale didn't help (keep the batteries out longer than 15 seconds), I'm out of ideas.  I can think of some hacks to get around it, but they might be more trouble than it's worth.

I’m having the same issue, the more weight I loose and the more muscle I put on the body fat % keeps going up. I removed batteries but no change. I got measured at the gym and they said my body fat is 19.8% the aria 2 says 35.1% and keeps going up the more I work out. I believe it is mistaking muscle for fat.

My new Aria 2 is doing the same thing. It’s giving me a crazy high reading and after recalibrating several times and changing from lean to normal and back again, it goes up by .2% each time. Super annoying.

I'm not sure if anyone is still helping costumers on this or if they just gave up, but this Aria 2 Body Fat thing is ridiculous.

I tried to contact costumer service but they didn't reply. I did all the steps here and on the other forum (with 37078 replies!!!! seriously...) and none of them work because simply FitBit has set that all women will be 30% more of body fat no matter what. Me and my boyfriend are sharing the scale since last week and I was shocked that I went from 20% fat on my previous scale to 34%! First I though "wow, the lockdown made me really gain a bunch of weight" - which it actually didn't, as I lost 4kg in the past 2 months. The weight is super accurate, but the body fat is insane for me. For my boyfriend, however, it was always super accurate, with between 13%-14% body fat.

Yesterday during my 4th rant of trying yet another community tip, I took out the batteries, reset it and reconnected it to the wi-fi. Forgot to tell it to my boyfriend. This morning he weights himself and as the scale thinks it's me (we have +/- the same weight) it automatically gives him 34% of body fat. Now how did he get 20% more fat over night? Is it just because fitbit is using the same percentage for women? Is that why they say it might work to change your gender? I mean what's this of buying a 130€ scale, 3x more expensive than a regular one, just to get inaccurate body fat%?? And why isn't anyone addressing this/replying to e-mails/fixing this over the past 3 years??

It's very disappointing that you get something from a company you trusted, that is an absolute scam and that no one seems to reply to your concerns!

I hope someone from Fitbit actually replies and gives me a solution, rather than taking out batteries, changing your gender and just weighting yourself 5 times – this doesn’t work 😉

Thank you!

I'm not sure about how it works with 2 users but I found turning off the lean mode gave more accurate readings.

In the app go to your account.

Select the Aria 2 scale from devices.

Go into the scales "users".

Select the user and in there is the option to turn on/off lean mode.

I am guessing that if there are 2 users both will show in the scales user section. I also imagine that you will be able to select different options for each user. It should be a case of telling the scale who is getting on which I think is done by selecting the different icons for different users. I have a coffee mug for me.

Hopefully this works. Like a say, it's only me that uses mine so it's set for 1.

Thanks for that! I did already try to activate and deactivate lean mode, without success 🙂

Maybe someone from costumer service has some tip! If someone is out there?

I’ve tried this a few times. I’ve tried everything. Even deleting it from my Fitbit app. Now it won’t let me re-add it. 😂. Its heading straight back where it came from.

Anyone that has the following specific problem might find this strategy helpful.

Body fat accuratish for 9 months in 23-26% range suddenly jumped to 36% after a wifi reset. Identical thing happened 3 years ago and stayed incorrect for over 6 months until it mysteriously fixed itself (probably on reset).

Just spent 4 hours solving this !!!

Following suggestions failed:

Tried usual, reconfiguring Aria 2 (5 times)

Removing batteries and repeating weighing 5 times to calibrate (countless times).

Resetting on and off to show Body Fat and BMI and lean mode from phone app, website and computer app.

Nearly everything else suggested and just about anything possible.

Finally, one post mentioned changing gender from female weighing then back to male. Did this (and bizarrely gender was listed as nothing to start with). Straight away female went to correct value of 23.5% but when set back to male went to 36% again. Repeated and when back to male (what I am) fixed on correct value (although seems a little low - about 1.5% down on what I was 3 days ago).

Hope this helps anyone with the same problem wasting an aeon. C'mon fitbit, fix your flaky software or at least provide a clear flowchart type thing which includes all these different scenarios and helps users get to a fix quicker.

I'm having a similar problem, albeit in the opposite direction. I am new to fitbit as I am trying to get in shape for the first time in years, and while I'm flattered that the scale thinks I'm only 15% body fat, I know that I am about double that.
