The Aria 2 scales link to the fitbit servers directly via wifi - there is no connection (via bluetooth) between the scales and the app.
The new Aria Air works differently - it doesn't have wifi and does use bluetooth to connect the scales to the app.

Perhaps I have got it wrong - I'm no expert. Apologies if I have. Hopefully someone else will post their thoughts.

@Fitbilly17 I don't know if the box is significantly different in different countries. I am in the US and @SteveH is in the UK. Looking at my box, there is a Bluetooth logo on the front of the box in the upper right that says Smartphone required for setup. The back of the box has a smartphone icon that says easy smartphone setup with Bluetooth technology and a wi-fi icon that says that it syncs stats wirelessly over wi-fi.
Does your box say something different? Can you post a picture? Where are you located?
We're here to help.
Actually, can you clarify your question? Are you saying that when you open your app, the scale is not on your list of devices? Are you trying to set up a scale? I re-read your original post and it can be taken different ways.
BTW, it takes a lot for an empty box to leave my house. Plus, Fitbit puts serial numbers on the box. Fitbit boxes never leave the house until an item is truly retired.
