Varying weight on Aria

I’ve looked through the message board and not seen anything specifically like my issues, so here we go:

I bought my Aria about 4 years ago. In the last 6 months I’ve been noticing that the results on the scales have a variance of about 2-3 pounds. To test out the problem I decided to weigh myself three times in a row on both the Aria and a new set of salter scales my housemate owns.

When I first started doing the test I weighed the same amount on both scales which was fortunate. To start off I have to weigh myself 3 times on both to make sure I’m getting an accurate reading as generally the Aria adds a pound on for the second weigh-in and adds another pounds on the third. As I don’t want to give myself an inaccurate reading I go for the highest weight shown.

On the flip side the salter has never had this issues, and has never had a weight variance issue when I do the three weigh-ins and after four weeks of testing the salter now shows me a 3lb lighter than the lightest result the Aria gives me.

Is this normal or it it likely my Aria is defective?

p.s I weigh myself on a hard, flat surface and put both weighing scales in the exact same spot to make sure there is continuity with each weigh in. Also the batteries of the Aria are new and were replaced when I started the test as I was unsure if that was causing the issue.

Has there been any change to the way you store the scales? I'm thinking of this comment in the manual:

"If your Aria is picked up and moved between measurements, or stored
sideways against a wall when not in use, the scale will go through a calibration
process the next time it is used for weighing. Up to two consecutive weigh-ins
will then be required before your scale is recalibrated and again displays
consistently accurate measurements. You will know that your Aria is
calibrating when you see the "SENSING" message appear on the screen."

Hi Steve,

thanks for the info and the speedy reply!

no particular change to the way I store them (they sit flat on the ground), but I do have to move them for each weigh in as the tiles in my bathroom aren’t all uniformly level to one another so I like to make sure it is sitting centrally on a tile and also due to the size of my bathroom (it’s very small) I have to move them to the centre of the room to properly step on them.

This could be the issue i’m experiencing, but from recollection I’ve not seen the “sensing” message in a long while and it hasn’t appeared during my test.

I’ll try leaving it in one spot and not touching it (bar weighing myself) and see if that correct the issue.

thanks for the help 🙂

Let me start by saying that I am ready to throw my Aria scale out the window.  Granted, it is old... but I weighed myself on it five times this morning (within a three minute time frame), and was returned five different results, within a 9.4lbs range.  Yes, ready to toss it.

With that said, I am glad that I have large tiles in the bathroom.  That may sound like a comment better suited for a home decor post than a weight loss one, but it is relevant.

You mentioned that you have many uneven tiles in your bathroom.  I have found, over the years (my Aria scale has moved with me between two houses in Toronto, one in Ottawa, and three in the Los Angeles... with two 3-month stays in Tokyo) that the Aria - in fact, ANY bathroom scale - will be more accurate if it is sitting on a single tile, rather than on a floor made up of many smaller tiles.  Do you have another surface you can test it on?  Say, kitchen?
