Fitbitting with "Man's Best Friend" (upload dog photos here)

ANSWERED

We live in "Steinbeck country" (Salinas Valley/Monterey County), named after the famous author John Steinbeck. And just as Steinbeck documented his journeys with his beloved dog in "Travels with Charlie", I'm going to photojournal in this thread my "Travels with Melody".

A lot has changed in Salinas since the days of Steinbeck. But some things haven't changed that much. Today we visited the childhood home of Steinbeck, which has been restored to its original beauty.

Down the street from the Steinbeck House is the Steinbeck Public Library, with a bronze statue of the author at the front entrance. I don't think Melody's ever seen a statue before. At first she was puzzled that he didn't greet her - or even flinch one little bit.DSC_0047 resize.jpg

Then she surprised me and became downright ornery!

So I took her back to to dog training school for some proper obedience training. Of course, she passed with flying colors.

She is holding treats. Give me a treat.

We go to this brewery all the time. I take dog biscuits to the resident bar dog. I forgot today. I hung my head in shame even. She did not for give me. She keep sniffing my purse and looking at me with sad puppy dog eyes. I failed her 😩

Hi Baltoscott,

He is unhooked!! He only gets hooked up over night while I sleep, because
otherwise he follows hunters over the swingbridge and when they shoot
something, (a stag that I found out about.) he turns up along the ridge
behind them to investigate - and gets himself home to bed on the porch
before I wake up.

He is a problem child who 'adopted' me almost 5 yrs ago when I came across
him wandering at the end of my driveway.

He'd obviously been very badly treated, he was incredibly timid, and would
not have been deemed re-house-able had I taken him to the pound. I notified
everyone I could think of in case his owner was looking for him.

If I tie him up with anything other than chain - he chews through it
straight away. He'll chew himself free - and stay there if he chooses, he
simply hates to be tied. With a chain he resigns himself to his situation
and doesn't fuss at all.

I hate to think of what he's had done to him, he is a lovely, smart dog who
thinks that I am just the bees knees - which is nice!

He used to go in the kennel at night, but he'd far rather stay on the porch
on his bed. he even has a turtleneck sweater, and wool-lined oilskin coat
to wear in the winter on the porch!

He is a hunting dog - pighunting, and has got several pigs with my husband,
he also loves to chase deer, and has killed numerous other citizens - much
to my dismay.

I love him to pieces, but never know just what trouble he is going to get
into next.

Just this morning my neighbor was babysitting him inside her house with her
2 dogs, and he knocked the prepared roast dish off the bench to eat her
dinner while she wasn't looking! Luckily he got such a fright when the
roasting dish hit the floor - he skedaddled and she was able to scoop the
roast up - undogged, and it can still be cooked for their dinner!!!

Just a problem child who can't be trusted to be good.

This is fun talking about our dogs!

Hope you are having fun with . who is your best friend? Jayhawk????

Oh nice.  That looks like a Seattle rain forest @Frisko, I can see why you'd want to disappear in there.

[edit -- Whoops.  I see I just replied to a post that is over a year old.  Guess will see if Frisko is still on fitbit 🙂 ]

Oh yes, @JoBo16 -- Jayhawk is definitely my best friend (at least dog friend!).

Your story about the roast reminds me of a dog I met a few years ago.  His parents renewed their vows in their backyard which was to be followed with an outdoor reception complete with pit beef on the grill.  About 50 people were present, including the couple's three young children.  The pit master was carving up one of the roasts during the ceremony and got distracted by the wedding vows, The dog took advantage and swiped the roast; one of of the human kids noticed right away and screamed out right as the vows completed, and soon there was great merry chase -- the dog with a mouth full of meat as big as his head, and three young kids yelling and running in pursuant (along with half the wedding party) as he romped around the back yard trying to make his escape.

I didn't not witness this event, but the couple told me that there was more than one roast, so no one went hungry. 😂

Funny!!! That is exactly the sort of thing my problem child would get up
to.

Reminds me of a funny story about Boy's cousin, Chisel. A mini schnauzer
here for Christmas one year. He's an inside dog of course, and Uncle Steve
(my husband) taught Chisel he could sit up at the table and eat off a plate
like the rest of the family. Chisel of course, jumped up to my seat to eat
my ham sandwich when I got interrupted and got up to get something for
someone else. He never put a paw on the table, just ate direct from my
plate seated on my chair!

We all roared with laughter! Uncle Steve especially!!! Chisel's mum,
(Steve's sister), was the least amused of all of us!

Haha yes @Baltoscott Babyboo must have been focused on the ice cream in my hand. That look 😱

Jayhawk looks great in that picture by the way, a little star. 😎

@JoBo16, Boy looks so relaxed lying there, just enjoying the sun! My dog loves lying on her bed under the sun too, she just just falls into a deep sleep and won't wake up unless I make a lot of noise 😂
