1,000 calories on waking

I have recently aquired a Fitbit Blaze (3-4 days ago) and I am experiencing a bit of confusion. I have configured my profile as completely as I can, and double-checked for errors just to be sure, but every morning it tells me I've ALLREADY burned 1,000+ calories just by sleeping. That's a lot of calories and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing exercises in my sleep (Sleep exercising? is that a condition?). I've done some reading allready over the past day or so in order to try and understand this better but I'm dubious about the reasoning.

 

So far, it looks like this is chalked up to the BMR calculations, but I'm still wondering how I can be burning off 1,000 calories since midnight in my sleep unless I'm flailing around doing rowing exercises in my sleep somehow. I've read a number of other posts with people reporting 200 calories or somesuch, which sounds far more reasonable for basic homeostasis, but I'm getting 1,000!

 

To put it bluntly, is this because I'm a fat mexican? (I actually am hispanic, so just injecting some humor). Am I seriously so overweight that my body burns off 1,000 calories a night and I still manage to maintain my gut? I just can't see how I'm burning off so many calories in my SLEEP when my roomate works at a local department store and doesn't burn that many in a day. I keep thinking my blaze might be faulty or something.

Any ideas?

Hi Shalmendo, I would say these are your resting calories.  If this helps at all, I'm 38, female, 5'8" weigh about 150 and my resting calories are 60 calories per hour.  So if I get a solid 8 hours of sleep I still burn almost 500.  You can check your resting calories on fitbit by tapping the "cals" icon on the dashboard, then go to "today" and there's an arrow to expand a graph of your calorie burn per 15 minutes in the top right corner.  It may seem like you're burning a lot of calories during sleep, but as you loose weight, that number will go down.

Hello @Shalmendo welcome to the Fitbit Community! The tracker will take into consideration the information you entered when you set up your account ( gender, age, height, and weight ) to provide your BMR. My advise is to enter your information on any BMR calculator on the web and compare the information you get to what your Fitbit is showing. If you see a big discrepancy and your information is correct on your settings please contact our support team so they can review your tracker's back-end information and provide you personalized assistance.

To my embarassment I overestimated my weight. I did not have a scale available at the time so I plugged in the number I thought was close enough (380 lbs) but was apparently over 100 pounds off in my estimate!

 

On one hand i'm quite happy that I only weigh 264 pounds, but embarassed I overestimated my weight so extensively. However, I did update my profile properly with my actual weight (I really should get an Aria scale) and it still shows me about 900 calories on waking.

 

I am 5 foot six inches tall, weigh 264 pounds, and am getting 900 calories on waking. I'm not sure if these are normal numbers or not. Anyone have any idea?

 

I fully understand that the BMR calculations are involved but 900 calories in my sleep seems a bit much. Like I said in my original post, I can't see how i could be burning so much unless I'm sleep exercising. If that's actually the case, however, I'm probably about to become an internet sensation and have a lot of jelous people trying to figure out how to do the same themselves... Granted, I am very much a beginner in trying to seriously look after my health and have little understanding how things like the MBR actually are calculated. I have a background in computer networking, and while I was throughly exposed to medical practice through my father's work, I didn't pay much attention to details involving body health and exercise, so all of this is new to me and I don't exactly have a good feel for the value of a calorie and effort involved to burn one, or several.

 

Right now i'm just trying to determine if the 900 calories i'm burning in my sleep is a feasible number or if I am seeing a 'big discrepancy' or not. I don't know at this point and I don't want to bother the support team with ignorance lol.

I thought I had fully explored the app and website but apparently there's far more there then I discovered! Good to know my calorie burn rate, and it looks like my Blaze is functioning as intended! Thanks very much for educating me on this detail.

 

I wish I weighed as little as you! I'm on my way to losing weight though, so hopefully eventually!

As a lark, and totally forgetting I did it, I had entered my weight as 999lbs. and had forgotten that I did. As such, the calorie count was way way too high than my normal counts and I was befuddled. While searching the forums, and doing my own research of my account settings, I then noticed my previous entry on my weight setting and it dawned on me why my calorie count suddenly took a sharp turn for the better. I wondered why I was doing so darn well yet not losing any weight to account for it. Embarrassed? yes.

I feel your concern, I came upon your post because I as well was looking for an answer, I am 5’2 and weigh 280, I wear my Fitbit Religiously and every single day it tells me I have burned Over 1000 calories in my sleep, IF this is legit, then I’m ecstatic! But it is confusing to think that’s possible. This AND my daily calorie burn equals around 3800 calories at the end of my day. We do need to know if this is correct, so that we can be as accurate as possible! I’m on a very regimented program, because 5 years ago, I weighed 404 pounds and lost approximately 157 pounds and I still have at least 100 to go to get to my target weight.This was made possible Without Surgery or Medication. Thats why I rely so much on my Fitbit. So I really NEED to know for sure. Thank you Fitbit and the community for being so Awesome!
