Who else thinks that when your battery dies there should be a back up in place to have your phone track steps while you charge your tracker or forget it at home?

Go to the add tracker routine, scroll down, if you see mobile track your all set. 

Mobile track uses your phone to track fitbit steps

I think if you're that concerned, carry a second tracker.

Where do we go to find the Mobile track option? Is that something we do in the app, or online? Does it only work with certain phones? Thanks.

Yes it is your phone to track your steps.
Go to your device list, press the plus sign, if mobile RT is available it will show up.
