Judging by all the posts I find on this subject, I'm guessing that any efforts to get this thing to work are pretty much a waste of my time and that I'm probably better off to take it back and get a tried and true fitness tracker/monitor, like Polar?

Yup, did all that....still nothing. Funny thing though, I took it back, exchanged it for a Garmin, and low and behold all I did was take it out of the box, charge it, downloaded the app and it worked!!! Not a single hassle or confusion. The wonders of technology.....or at least technology that works. Unfortunate, was really excited about my FitBit purchase. Sorry FitBit....Garmin wins....figure it out.
