Blaze registering too many steps

My blaze is just over 12 months old and I've never had a problem with it. However recently I've been thinking its registering too many steps, and today it jumped from about 7000 to 12000 steps in less than an hour, all while I was not really moving much... is it that these are not meant to last much longer than a year??? Has anyone else had this problem??

Did you already try restarting your tracker a few times? This article explains how to do that.
