Heart rate showing "--"

I frequently walk in a long building with a staircase at one end. I usually do a lap around the building, climb 4 flights up/down, and repeat. I'll leave the stairs out for some laps and do stairs when my HR gets below where I want it.

Ok, the problem I notice is that when I do the stairs my Blaze shows "--" for my HR (or occasionally some ridiculously low number like 71 after 4 flights!) After about 1 lap of the building flat walking my HR reading comes back to normal and is fine until I do stairs again! I've tried moving the tracker to different positions on my wrist with no change. Has anyone else had this issue? Could it be because my movement pattern suddenly changes when I start the stairs?

This isn't a deal breaker for the Blaze; I really like this tracker. It's a bit aggravating to check my status only to get a "--" though.
