How do I get my fitbit and my fitness space  to connect? My wife has managed to do it but cannot remember how

Like other third party apps I believe you have to go to the third party website and look for the link to connect to Fitbit. They will ask for your Fitbit login information and will then request access to your account.

As mentioned, you need to verify that you can connect your Fitbit account with your Fitness Space account. Please take a look at this page and search for Fitness Space.
