The connected GPS is a cool feature, but noticed that can't tell the time unless I bail out of the GPS. What am I doing something wrong?

What exercise are you doing? From what I am looking at on my blaze, I can see a screen with a displayed item (heart race, pace, etc) and a pause button, and the overall time. If I tap or slide my finger up or down on the display (above the elapsed time) it switches from pace, to average pace, to calories, to steps, to clock, to miles, to heart rate, and then repeats. So if you want to see the time, all you have to do is swipe until the clock is what appears as the main display on the screen. Personally, I swipe to display the heart rate since that is a good indicator for me as to how hard I am running, etc.
Unless I completely misunderstood the question, give this a try and hopefully it helps you.

Nope. You read it correctly and I did not think to swipe up and down. Just saw it. Still getting used to this thing.
Many thanks!
