can anyone advise whether buying the more expensive leather strap would reduce irritation to the skin? Or is it the same as the original strap as far as skin irritation is concerned?

Yes, it does, the Fitbits own leather strap is poor quality for the price. Bought a leather strap for the versa 3 for a fraction of the price and already it is far better quality than Fitbit's own strap. I would still recommend keeping the rubber strap for the workout then changing over afterward.
