If either of you are running iOS 13 then there is a bug with notifications. Keep an eye on the following thread where fitbit are posting updates:

Best AnswerNot just notifications but syncing is going in and out. I haven't been able to sync in two days. Sucks because I am in the middle of a citywide challenge for my job. I have tried all the recommended troubleshooting tips multiple times and nothing. This has occurred several times over last few weeks, FITBIT really needs to do better.
