I am using an Airdyne for high intensity interval training.  At the end of the workout, it shows that I have gone no distance and have burned relatively few calories.  The default setting for bike riding is to have GPS on.  Is this the problem that causes the inaccurate distance measurement?

Yes, that will be the cause of the lack of distance covered.

Really your best option is just to set the Blaze in workout mode where it will use your heart rate to calculate your calories and then edit the activity in the app.
