Step count inaccurate for stride length and distance

Hey guys I've seen similar threads about the inaccuracy issues and I've tried all of those solutions and none of them about. This issue seems to be a little bit different. Basically the number of steps that I take do not match the mileage that I get in the app nor do they match what it should be based on my stride length. For instance I recently walked 3.6  miles and got 5604 steps. Thats a stride of over 40 inches! Which is insane, especially considering I'm only 5'6". Before this (when I first started to notice the problem) I tried manually setting my stride to 26". It's still set at that but obviously isn't registering? I wore my friend's Garmin, who is a similar height and build to me, on the same arm for the same distance and ended up with less than half the steps. Her watch tracked the hike at 7 miles and I confirmed that on map my run. My watch gave mefme 4.8 miles!!! It's not off a little bit, it's off by THOUSANDS of steps every day which is incredibly frustrating.
