is there any way to swipe to move backwards, rather than use the back button?   Seems unnecessary.

There is no backwards swipe at the moment. Someone has created a feature request to enable this. If you'd like to add your vote you can find it here:

Hello @finniansdad welcome to the Fitbit Community! 🙂  As @SteveH mentioned currently there is no backwards swipe but the idea has been suggested on the Feature Request board, this forum is the ideal place for you to share your thoughts with the Fitbit Community and Fitbit product developers. Take a moment to vote and add your comment to the idea shared above.
