Welcome to the Fitbit community, @Suder
Sad to hear you're having issues with your Charge 5.
Although you've mentioned already having done that, I'd suggest to once again trying to restart your device as it sometimes takes more than one attempt to successfully do so. Before restarting it, you should verify that the charging contacts on your device are clean and the charging pins on it's charging adapter are clean as well and can move flawlessly. In doubt please have a look here:
How do I clean my Fitbit device?
Next please closely follow these instructions as timing is crucial for this procedure:
1.) Connect your Charge 5 to the charging cable which has to be connected to a reliable power source.
2.) Press the button located on the flat end of the charging cable 3 times within 8 seconds(!), holding each press for about 1 second(!).
3.) Wait around 10 seconds until the Fitbit logo appears on your device's display.
I'd like to point out that it sometimes requires more than one attempt to restart Charge 5. So, before throwing the towel, please give it another try.
If that really won't work for you, please try if changing your device's clock face will get it back to working order. Here's how to do that:
How do I change the clock face on my Fitbit device?
I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I had a similar problem but was getting a bluetooth connection. I tried changing watch faces and it worked! Thanks for the suggestion...

Thanks Talahthas for the advice. Unfortunately with the black screen of death, the Charge 5 is not working enough to get a Bluetooth connection with the App. I also tried your tried and true crossed fingers method without luck. I will try any suggested method of correction short of a hammer.

Thank you for trying to help, I suppose I will have to throw it away. I have an apple watch but I liked Fitbit step count which it doesn't appear to have.

Sad news on my front. I had a screen for about 10 minutes and then it went blank again:(. The watch was charged to about 80% last night (read from Fitbit app) but this morning it was already at 15%. I tried changing faces again, still no good. Will post or look for another post on this issue. It is different from this thread, as I do have a bluetooth connection and am communicating with the watch. It is still measuring items and is updating in the app- but no watch face...
