Charge 5 counting my crochet as steps

Doesn't matter which wrist I use, my Charge 5 is counting almost all my stitches as steps. Im guessing taking the watch off (and hopefully remembering to put it back on when done crocheting) is the only fix?

Unfortunately, you are correct that taking it off is the way to prevent steps while crocheting.  Fitbit can only infer steps from regular rhythmic movement of arms/wrists as in arm swings while walking.  The same thing playing drums, strumming guitar, petting an animal, etc.  It has been suggested Fitbit allow an optional step pause function but that has never happened (I suppose people would then complain about forgetting to start restart it).

The only suggestion is to use that time to charge your tracker.

I can get extra steps just driving 🤣 It's a good job I don't rely on steps as a focus for my fitness.

It would be nice if fitbit developed a way to go into the app and retroactively tell it to discount steps from a certain time frame.

Yea. I like to know in general how many steps I've taken, and driving (and even sleeping) adds some, but not the literal thousands crochet adds. Mind you, it made me feel accomplished until I realized the error. 😆

It used to be if you manually added an activity called "Driving" (title had to be exact), the steps would be negated during that time.  I don't know if that is still the case.

I frequently take my tracker off and put it in my pants pocket when I am doing things that might damage it. It won't track my heart rate, of course, but it does count steps. That should keep it from counting excessive wrist movements as steps.

I get lots of zone minutes when I'm having a panic attack 😪

I hear you! I have POTs, so I hit zone just by standing, walking casually, etc. Fitbit did tailor zones to be more 'personally accurate' not too long ago, but I'm still fooling the system with my dysautonomia. 😆 So with my watch zones inaccurate, I was hoping for a bit better on the step accuracies.

I bet it would work better if you could set a timer for how long it's off and have it buzz when you've hit the time.

I meant to reply here, and it went to the main thread instead, oops! I bet it would work better if you could set a timer for how long it's off and have it buzz when you've hit the time.

A couple of months ago I noticed that my hourly step count didn't register when I was grocery shopping. I figured out that the step count had to be tied into movement of the arms and when you are grocery shopping the hands are generally on and steering the grocery cart. Now I just make sure I have my 250 steps in before grocery shopping. The workarounds we do to make sure we get that 250 steps per hour!
