Charge 5 doesn’t record bike

Hi -it’s my understanding the Fitbit won’t log miles on a stationary bike.  Whenever my hand moves and shows anything greater than 0 miles (.1 for instance), it’s impossible for me to manually log miles after.  I go in to edit details, type in 5 miles, it shows, then instantly reverts back to 0.1 or whatever it is. I only bought a Fitbit for stationary bike. Please help.  Thanks.

Hello again @Bike1984

Yes, Spinning or Indoor Workout would be the best choices for your stationary bike indoors - no GPS. That’s really important.

Bike would be good for outdoors and you can use GPS or not for that.  Probably it’s better if you want to track the route.

Weights is the name of the Shortcut and the best option for you.  I only rename mine because I’m doing an actual class by that name.  If you’re doing weights and not a studio lesson, it’s probably best to leave it as Weights in the exercise record on your App.

 I hope that helped!

Hello @Bike1984

How are you logging the exercise?  Are you using an Exercise Shortcut on your tracker and pressing Start and Finish?

I’m just wondering if you used the Spinning shortcut, it might ignore arm movements more…

Just in case you haven’t tried it yet, you can add the shortcut by going from the Today Screen in the App on your phone, tap your profile picture then Charge 5, then Exercise Shortcuts.  Choose one you don’t use by swiping left to delete it, then tap +Exercise Shortcut and select Spinning.  Then sync your Charge 5 and it should show up on there.

If you’re already doing it that way, sorry. That’s the only thing I could think of.  I’m pretty sure you could still edit your mileage afterwards but it might stick better.

I hope that helps and sorry if it doesn’t.

Thanks for the reply.  I’m trying to edit the ride after. However, the mileage shows updated then reverts back.  Whenever the GPS doesn’t show 0.0 and shows 0.1 due to my arm moving or something it seems to glitch the system. I’ll edit and change to 5.0 or 5.1 and it sticks for a second then goes back to 0.1s

Hello again @Bike1984

I just want to double-check.  You’re cycling indoors on a static bike aren’t you?  Are you using an appropriate shortcut such as Spinning or Inside Workout?  It’s a good idea to.

You mentioned GPS, are you turning it on for your indoor exercise sessions?  That could be where the problem lies, if so.  GPS is for outdoor exercises like Running and is used to track a route. It won’t work properly indoors because it won’t get a proper signal and if it measures you moving your arm, that might be why it’s overriding your attempts to change the distance as it knows you haven’t gone anywhere…

I’d try switching off GPS and using an appropriate Shortcut.  I think it would probably track better than and accept editing.

 I hope that helps.

Yes I’m stationary indoors.  I see a bunch of posts and people are saying the same thing for years 🤦‍:male_sign:.  I always keep gps on since sometimes I’m riding outdoors, but that is probably what the problem is. Not sure why I wouldn’t be able to edit, but I guess the workaround you advise makes the most sense.

Few other questions, will these threads delete over time or is there a way for me to delete them?  Also, when I lift weights at the gym, my watch never auto recognizes. Sometimes I forget.  Is that a situation you have? I’ve had the watch recognize me walking to my kitchen (rather sensitive to realize that), but lifting weights never.

thanks.

It’s also weird that the Fitbit app doesn’t show 5 miles, but if I go to the dashboard for the website itself on Fitbit it shows 5 miles. But then when I click to edit it’s showing 0.1.  Nothing syncs up.

Hello @Bike1984

These threads and the community are usually really useful for helping other people who might have the same problem.  That’s why it’s helpful to have them and mark them as solved (if they are).

To answer your other question, weight lifting isn’t one of the Auto-Recognized activities.  If you tap on your profile picture then Activity and Wellness, then Exercise, you can see which ones are.

I highly recommend you follow my previous instructions to also set up a shortcut for Weights which is there.  I use it myself when I do Body Pump and set it so the screen stays on just for that  hour so I can check my heart rate.  When I’ve finished, I go into the App and edit the name.

I hope that’s answered your questions for you.  If you have any more, let me know.

So I should do spin inside and bike outside because spin doesn’t even have a gps option I think.  Body pump is better than weight?

Thanks for your help! How do I close or delete a message thread?

--------------

I also see these messages online but not in the Fitbit app. Is that normal? Both are linked to my email shouldn’t it be the same?

Hello again @Bike1984

You can edit your own messages by selecting the 3 dots at the top right of message box.  There is a time limit to this though - I don’t know exactly how long it is though as I usually do it soon after posting when I discover I’ve made a typo or something.

You can also mark this as solved by giving a best answer (if you feel you have received a good enough response for your problem).

As people are constantly making  new threads yours will slide off the main page and become a lot less prominent.

The only people that have the power to close or delete threads are moderators.  I’m not sure why you’d  want to delete it though as the information would be useful to other people with similar problems.

I’m not sure I understand about your other question about messages in the App as I’ve never seen message board information on mine.  This community seems to be a separate thing.

 I hope that helped!

@Bike1984 You can't edit logged exercises. For some, you can rename them (ie. Workout can be renamed) but that's it.

Spin is the correct exercise to track indoor cycling, however, you will only get calories and HR out of it. There is no distance or any other cycling metrics in this case (Fitbit cannot know).
