Today I took my Charge 5 for a first run. I was using the internal GPS and started my running exercise manually. I only ran like 3 km and the charge ended my running session 2 times.
Is that an issue with the GPS being dropped? Are there other reasons why it might stop my running session?
I saw a quite lengthy thread about the charge 4 with a similar issue. Is the charge series just a glorified step counter?

Hi, welcome to the Fitbit Community forums, @SunsetRunner.
I appreciate all the information that you've shared about the problem you're been experiencing with your Charge 5.
Before considering other options, please let me know if you're only experiencing this problem while Running or if it happens with other GPS and non GPS activities as well. In the meantime, please try to complete a three pulse restart procedure following the steps listed here below:
In addition, in case this is related to the GPS connection, make sure to follow the steps suggested in this article. Keep in mind that all devices with GPS sensors require a direct path to GPS satellites to calculate location. A weak GPS signal might affect the accuracy of your route and other activity data. Your device uses your step count to calculate distance until it finds a signal, so the total distance calculated for a workout may be slightly less accurate when GPS isn't available for the entire time. In particular, please make sure of the following:
Hope this helps, I'll be around.
