@SunsetRunner

Have you tried forcing a sync on the phone?  On the Today screen, pull down and this will force the sync.

Have you tried restarting your phone?

What time does the app show for the last sync?  Click on the Battery icon at the top left and it will show the last sync.

Hi there, @SunsetRunner. Welcome to the Fitbit Community Forums. Thanks for the details provided in your post. We'll be glad to help you to figure out why your Fitbit app is showing less steps than your Charge 5.

As @gdio53 has mentioned and suggested, first make sure if your Charge 5 is in fact syncing and check when was the last time it synced. If you found out to have syncing difficulties, please see Why won't my Fitbit device sync?

Also, please keep in mind that if you stopped wearing/syncing your Fitbit device for a while (I'd say more than 7 days or so),  please note that it's an expected behavior as you should've logged in to sync your Fitbit device before wearing it again. Going a bit deeper into this, note that most Fitbit devices store up to 7 days of detailed minute-by-minute data. If you wait longer than 7 days before syncing, you may only see the most recent week's detailed data. Summary data (calories, distance, steps, and floors) will be stored for 30 days. Nevertheless, if your Fitbit device was unpaired from your Fitbit account during this period of time, neither the 7 days can be recovered or restored.

However, if you remember the exact amount of steps or the name of the activity you performed, you can try manually logging the activity. For more information, see How do I manually log exercises in the Fitbit app?

The fitbit charge 5 is so frustrating. At lease once a month I have to force shutdown to reset. IT WILL NOT SYNC. It's just over a year old so, this should not be happening. It seems to happen after a charge.

I also continuously have issues getting my Charge 5 to sync.  I was sent a Charge 5 as a replacement when my previous FitBit device stopped working for no obvious reason.  Very frustrating, not sure I'll stick with FitBit after this Charge 5 is no longer useable.
