Charge 5 is tracking steps when i'm not even moving

My Charge 5 keeps saying I hit 10,000 steps even when I haven't. Like at 2am. Likewise it will say 10,000 steps achieved when I'm well over 10,000. What is going on?

Hi there, @Redrooster433. It's nice to see you around the Fitbit Community Forums. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm sorry to hear that your Charge 5 is tracking steps even when you're not moving. I understand your concern, I will do my best to help you with this!

Before we can work on this together, could you confirm if you have MobileTrack connected to your account? MobileTrack is a function that allows you to track basic information using your phone's sensors when a Fitbit device isn't nearby. If this is correct and there was a fan or something buzzing nearby, you might get extra steps as this function might think you're exercising.

Assuming this applies to you, I'd recommend removing this function from the Fitbit app and monitoring your watch's behavior afterward. For instructions on how to remove a device, see this help article.

Last but not least, keep in mind the algorithm is designed to look for intensity and motion patterns that are most indicative of people walking and running. When working at a desk, cooking, or performing other activities with arm movements, a device on your wrist may add some steps. When you’re doing activities that involve arm movement, such as working or cooking, you often walk a few steps in-between stationary periods as well, so the device tries to give you credit for those steps. For most customers, the number of extra steps added by arm-based movement isn’t significant when compared to your overall stats.

Thank you for response. I don’t think I was clear in my post: the watch randomly announces I have hit 10,000 steps. It doesn’t add extra steps or subtract steps. It just vibrates and announces 10,000 step goal has been met. My watch and app might say 542 steps…. The watch will go off with the alert. My real total is not affected. It is just randomly going off. Any suggestions as to why that might be happening?

Hello @Redrooster433 ,

I don't know why you're getting a step goal completion when your device & app don't show the same.

For now, you can turn off the push notifications for step goal progress so that the notification doesn't trigger:

  • Tap your picture in the upper right of the Today page in the Fitbit app
  • Tap Fitbit settings in the menu that opens
  • Tap Push notifications under App settings
  • Tap Step goal progress to turn off this push notification
