Charge 5 not mapping gps route

so you GF and I have Charge 5s after our charge 4 starting to show lines on the screen. Now so far we have noticed that this **ahem** thing does NOT register our GPS location / our route when we walk or bike. Our Charge 4 would always show the GPS route.  We have allowed access on the phone end of it and done all I can think of.  

why isn’t this **ahem** thing recording our route or so via GPS??

The only things I can think of to check are:

Are you starting the activities from Shortcuts on the Charge 5 itself and pressing Start and Stop? 

Have you scrolled up after pressing Start on the activities and set GPS to on for them? You should only need to do this once unless there's a firmware update that might switch it off.

Have you set GPS on your Charge 5 to either Dynamic or Phone?  You can do this by scrolling down from the Clock Face screen to Settings, tap, then scroll up to GPS and choose your preferred style...

Those are the main things I can think of.  If you're doing all of those already, I'm not sure what's wrong.
