When I track a walk, the walk summary shows the correct number of steps (roughly 2k per mile) but on the daily screen it gives me way more credit. I started today with 2,000 steps did a walk adding 5,700 steps (correctly noted on the walk statistics) and ended up with 13k daily steps when done. The count then drops over the rest of the day. It is like the app is projecting I will keep doing more steps per hour for the rest of the day. Is this some known setting thing? It is a recent development.

Hello @KfitM
I hope I'm understanding your issue correctly.
By any chance, do you have your phone as a connected device in the Fitbit app? When you tap on the device icon in the upper right of the Today page and open the Connected to Fitbit page, do you see Phone listed under Devices?
This option lets you use your phone to track steps and workouts when you're not wearing your device. For some users, having their phone as connected device in the Fitbit app results in an overage of steps in the app. This is from the app getting steps counts from both the Fitbit and phone, essentially doubling the step count.

This sounds like a possibility. The double counting rings true when I tell the app that I have started a walk. I'll try starting the walk on the fitbit next time. It is a new thing though and I haven't made any changes to connected devices. I wouldn't think the step count would go down over the rest of the day if it was counting both. I would think it keeps recording too many steps. Plus it doesn't happen every time. Sort of like why some times the app shows the laps during the walk in km and the next time in miles.
