I was wearing thr Fitbit, the screen flashed and now it won't come on again. I plugged it in to charge and pressed the little button 3 tomes as suggested. The Fitbit sign came onto the screen and then nothing happened, eventually the screen got an "x" in a circle.

This red circle you mentioned usually appears when a firmware update has not been completed or when there's a problem during the process. Make sure to follow the recommendations listed in this article if this is the case. If you already tried to complete the 3 pulse restart procedure and you continue to experience the same problem with the display, please try these additional steps that have been useful for other users:
