Charge 5 won't work unless it's connected to the charging cable

My Charge 5 arrived last night, charged and synced to my app. Now when I unplug, the battery dies instantly and is unusable. I recharge, unplug and dies again. I simply cant use it. What is wrong please? It's brand new out of the box.
