Can someone tell me if the notification in the photo means my Charge 5's GPS is still connecting or successfully connected? It starts out as a scrolling message saying 'GPS Connecting...", but then stops scrolling, and the icon obscures whether it says "Connecting..." or "Connected." I'm exclusively using the built-in GPS.

I didn't see anything "official" in the Charge 5 manual, but this is how it's always worked for me.

Update: I think the GPS is disconnected in that photo I posted. I'm basing this off of a portion of the user manual, which shows a hollow icon for the disconnected state and a solid one for the connected state. The thing that makes me a little uncertain is that the two icons could also indicate whether my Charge 5 is using is built-in GPS or the one in my phone.

Good eye! My tracker wouldn't connect to GPS inside my house, so I turned on my phone's GPS and when it connected the tracker vibrated and the arrow filled in. In my experience, the GPS antenna and receiver connection are not very robust, and you definitely need a clear view of the sky.

@charleskn I don't think the antenna is long enough to get a GPS on most buildings.

Another update: I don't think the hollow / filled variations of that icon mean anything as to whether GPS is connected. I got a full map of today's run even though the icon was hollow for the entire route. Maybe filled means it is connected to my phone's GPS.

OK, I played around and found more information.
On page 38 of the Charge 5 manual.
I tried both internal and connected GPS, and in both cases the arrow filled in, and I saw a scrolling message: "GPS connected" along with a brief vibration. The scrolling "GPS connecting" message stops when it can't connect. It's possible the GPS connected after you started your run. The vibration is pretty brief, and easy to miss.
